Selection of a suitable crane in storage halls plays a key role in the construction of steel surfaces. The crane’s functionality is affected by many factors, including weight, spacing, its type or purpose. What must you pay most attention to, when selecting a crane for the future investment? Practical advice can be found in this article.

The role of the crane in a storage hall

The crane is a device that allows transportation of elements (small- and large-sized) on the hall’s surface in an easy and practical way. Its proper functioning facilitates processes, at the same time relieving blue-collar employees, whose role is limited to the preparation of cargo to transport and then to supervise it. We should decide about the selection of a suitable crane as soon as at the beginning of the investment planning because our decisions will translate into the quality of the entire hall’s design realisation in the long term (including the selection of necessary accessories to it).

Proper selection of the crane – practical advice

When proceeding to the design of steel hall using the crane, it is essential to consider the process and possible collisions that may result from its use. In the investment planning phase, specifying requirements for the so-called hoisting equipment is a very important element. This is it that influences the type of a used crane and the dimensions of the very design of the steel surface. Why? The hoisting equipment moving along the length of the hall with the transported element produces dynamic loads on crane girders transferred directly to the main frames of the entire structure. Thus, precisely selected cranes allow the transport of elements in horizontal and vertical planes (manoeuvre restrictions are: lifting height, length of the system’s runway and the tonnage of a given element).

The main parameter affecting both the dimensions and the price of the hall is the so-called required element lifting height. It defines the level, at which the crane will be mounted, which translates into a total height of a side wall along with the roof ridge of the planned investment. The manner in which the hall’s surface will be designed depends on the type and purpose of a given crane. In a situation when only one crane is required – it operates over the entire length of the building surface. If more of them are required – they are mounted so that they operate in tandem or separately.

Benefits for the investment

Cranes and hoist equipment, used to transport elements weighing sometimes several tonnes in closed areas of the building, play a key role in the proper functioning of the steel hall. Moving elements in a different way would be virtually impossible, and from the point of view of the entire investment – very uneconomic. Rising expenditure on the design of an appropriate structure and delivery of this type of equipment will ensure improving the logistics of a warehouse or a manufacturing facility.
